The Church Bell

Our church building has a bell in it.  I remember it being rung on Sunday mornings when I was little.  It would let people know that services were about to begin.  It has no been used for several years.  Recently I heard of another use for the bell that I did not know.  Many years ago it would sometimes be rung during the week.  This was before telephones were common in the country.  This meant that there had been a death of someone in the church.  When the men of the church heard the bell they would leave there work and go the cemetery to dig a grave.  There was one man in particular that would show up when the bell was rung.  His farm was very rocky. Whenever he appeared to help dig the grave he would be carrying a stone on his shoulder to mark the grave.  Just another sign of how times have changed.
