Now that March is here the topic of the garden for this year has come up. Most of my facebook friends have seen my photos tracking the progress of the family garden. I have decided to create a section on the blog for it this year.
I just turned the garden spots a couple of days ago. We usually turn it the fall but it was either too wet, too dry, or too cold. It was actually the spring before turned it last year so hopefully it won’t be an issue.
The first issue is always to decide what to plant this year. We keep talking about cutting back but somehow it does not happen. This year I did not turn quite as large a space but the discussion seemed to indicate planting the same things, just not as much.
The normal list includes cabbage, lettuce, onions, potatoes, squash, cucumbers, okra, crowder peas, corn, green beans, tomatoes, watermelon, canteloupe, and turnip greens. Last year we tried pumpkins but did not have much success. We only had one pumpkin and I accidentally ran over it while plowing. Glad we weren’t depending on that to be a successful venture!
Besides growing to eat during the summer, we can and freeze as much as possible to have during the winter. I used to think this was a dyeing art but it seems to be making a little bit of a comeback! Mamma is usually in charge of this but age is requiring my sister, who also grows a garden, and myself to be more involved in this.
Oh well, that is the introductory post for my garden spot. Hopefully in 2 or 3 weeks we will have the first crops(cabbage, lettuce, onions and “taters”) in the ground. I will keep you updated.
